Recently I was invited to speak to the 7th and 8th grade students in the AVID program at First Flight Middle School in Kill Devil Hills, Nc on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. AVID is an academic support program for middle and high school students, including some of whom may be economically disadvantaged and underachieving, to help prepare them for college and careers for their futures. Cindy McNeill, the 8th grade language arts and AVID teacher at First Flight Middle School had invited me to speak because of my kiteboarding career but also due to my Adventure Sports Degree. Mrs. McNeill said that se felt that having someone come to speak to the students who has taken an alternative path in their career would spark interest in the students. She also asked me to speak to the students about the Adventure Sports Institute of Garrett County, in McHenry, Md, and how the choice to go to college has helped my life.
I wanted to thank Mrs. McNeill and the AVID students of First Flight Middle for allowing me the opportunity to speak with them! Check out some photos below from the classroom.
Also, its starting to warm up in Hatteras and spring is here! Check back for photos and session reports from myself, Brandon Scheid and the other LF team riders here at REAL!
